D-Link Extender Won’t Connect to Router at 5GHz? Let’s Fix!

Setting up D-Link extenders to extend the WiFi coverage in the house is a common thing nowadays. But, even the best-performing machinery can fall victim to an issue. And, D-Link extenders are not different. A few of the D-Link users have reported about their extenders not connecting to the router at 5GHz. If you are also suffering from the same issue, give a read to this post. Here, you will learn various methods to resolve the issue you are currently facing. So, let’s get started.

Fixed: D-Link Extender Won’t Detect 5GHz

1. Reboot the Extender

Before you do anything else, try rebooting your D-Link WiFi extender. Perhaps your D-Link extender has fallen victim to technical glitches. Rebooting the extender will help in getting rid of them. Given below are the step-by-step instructions to reboot your D-Link extender:

  • Plug out your D-Link extender from the wall outlet.

  • Now, wait for some time.

  • Plug your D-Link extender back into the wall socket.

Now, check if your D-Link extender detects the 5GHz signal of the router. If you are still facing the issue, walk through the next troubleshooting hack.

Note: Rebooting will also work if you’re facing the dlinkrouter.local not working issue with your D-Link router.

2. Place the Extender Close to the Router

Chances are that you’ve placed your D-Link WiFi extender too far from the router due to which both devices are unable to communicate. To get rid of the issue, consider reducing the distance between both WiFi devices.

Another thing you can do to fix the issue is to replace the wireless connection between them with a wired one. But, make sure that the Ethernet cable you’ve used is free from wear and tear.

3. Relocate the Extender

Your D-Link extender might not be able to detect the router’s 5GHz signal if it is placed in a WiFi-interference zone. So, make sure that the extender is placed away from the devices that create electromagnetic waves. To name a few, do not place your D-Link WiFi extender near televisions, Bluetooth speakers, refrigerators, microwave ovens, cordless phones, etc.

Apart from that, water also tends to absorb the WiFi signals of your D-Link range extender. Therefore, make sure that the extender and the objects with a large amount of water are placed at a safe distance. Do not keep the extender in a corner or near a concrete wall. Choose a central location in your home instead so that WiFi signals will equally spread throughout the home.

4. Update the Extender

If the firmware on which your D-Link extender is operating is outdated, then the extender won’t be able to detect the router’s 5GHz signal. Therefore, don’t wait to update the firmware of your D-Link extender.

Given below are the steps to update the firmware of your D-Link extender:

  • Ensure that your extender is receiving a fluctuation-free power supply.

  • Once ensured, connect it to the router and download the firmware file.

  • Thereafter, unzip the firmware file and access dlinkap.local.

  • Log in to your D-Link WiFi extender using the default username and password.

  • You will be taken to the web-based management utility of your extender.

  • Once there, select the Management option at the top-right corner of the window.

  • Now, select the Upgrade option.

  • Click the Manual Upgrade option and move to the Select File option.

  • Locate the extracted firmware file and click the Open button.

  • Afterwards, click the upload button.

  • The firmware of your D-Link WiFi extender will be updated.

  • Your device will reboot as a part of the firmware update process.

Once your extender gets updated, check if it is able to detect the router’s 5GHz WiFi signals.

5. Reset the Extender

If none of the troubleshooting hacks worked in your favor, then chances are that your extender is not configured properly. Therefore, you need to set up your Dlink WiFi extender again. But before that, you need to restore the extender to factory default settings.

To wipe out the extender’s personalized settings, locate the Reset button, and press it using a paper clip. Your extender will reset in some time. Thereafter, access the D-Link extender login page to configure it from scratch.

Sum Up

This was all about what to do if your D-Link WiFi extender is unable to detect the router’s 5GHz signals. Let’s hope that the troubleshooting tips discussed in this article will help you overcome the issue with ease.
