VMFH has a long history of serving the community, dating back to its founding in 1897. The organization was originally known as the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, and was founded by Mother Mary Xavier Mehegan. The Sisters were a religious order of Catholic women who came to Allegany County, Maryland to serve the poor and sick. The Sisters established a hospital, which was later renamed St. Francis Hospital. In addition to the hospital, the Sisters also operated a school of nursing, which trained nurses to care for patients.
The Sisters continued to operate St. Francis Hospital until it was sold to the City of Cumberland in 1986. The hospital was then renamed Cumberland Medical Center. In 1997, the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany sold Cumberland Medical Center to the Virginia Mason Health System. Virginia Mason Health System is a non-profit organization that is based in Seattle, Washington. The Virginia Mason Health System also operates a hospital in Tacoma, Washington.
